I can see this book becoming a big hit in years to come. It was written in a way that seemed long but told the story of Kvothe well. The book is pretty long 722 pages to be exact, but within the story everything happens in the course of one day! This is the first book I have read that is written in this manner. It was strange to grasp but I really could get used to his style of writing. Normally I don’t like the “story within a story” writing but in this case it worked out well. I liked the fact that the book begins with a simple Inn keeper Kote who is actually a well known person whose real name is Kvothe. I thought Kvothe’s story of his life to be very interesting and unique. It kept my attention through the entire book well. The only part of the book that I didn’t care for was Bast. I didn’t understand what he was. I understand that Bast is a student studying under Kvothe who is portrayed as a mortal but really isn’t. Bast will burn if he touches iron just like a demon would but he is not a demon. One passage said that his eyes change colors when he gets angry just the same as Kvothe’s, but kvothe Is mortal Bast again is not. The only hint the book gave about Bast is that he was offended by the scribe who said something to the extent he was writing Kvothe’s story just like another fairy tale. So there is a possibility that Bast is a member of the fae. Of course I didn’t like the ending because the story is left unfinished. The sequel should be coming out soon I hope! I think that there will be three books because Kvothe said he would delay the scribe three days to tell his story, so this book was day one, now he has to write day two and three. I will be waiting patiently to read his next book.
